All-comers / Handicap fleet
BSSC would like to welcome Stephen Wightman as the new fleet captain for All-comers. If you find yourself at the clubhouse with very few other sailors planning to race in the same design of boat as you, chances are you'll start an "All-comers" or handicap race.
The Portsmouth Yardstick System aims to handicap boats based on their relative performance against the other boats they race with. Handicaps are allocated and administered by clubs to suit their local factors such as boat type, wind trends and water type as well as enabling the club to evaluate crew skill factor. In order to score a handicap race each boat's elapsed time (time taken to sail around the race course) must be converted to a corrected time (time converted based on a boats handicap).
This is done by applying a simple correction calculation to each boats elapsed time: Corrected time = (elapsed time x 1000) / PY
The latest Portsmouth number list is available to view here and is also displayed on the club notice board.
