Cockle fleet

Stiffkey Cockle fleet at BSSC
The Cockle fleet has become one of the most friendly and talked about fleets at BSSC for several good reasons. Although there are some very competitive Cockle sailors, the overriding aim of the fleet is to have fun. The season usually starts with a beach picnic followed by a race from the beach using a Le Mans style start. There is a series of 8 races from June to September with the best 5 counting towards the Cockle trophy. In addition, the Cockle fleet races on 4 days of sailing week and there are other fun races to Burnham Overy Staithe and against the Morston Cockle fleet. A highlight of the season is the champagne breakfast up Mow Creek on one of the highest tides of the year, followed by an obstacle course fun race. Off the water the Cockle fleet has an annual tennis match against the Hawk fleet. The season ends with an AGM, dinner and golf match. The fleet keeps in contact and often sort out crew through a Google group. Potential Cockle owners and crew are welcome to contact the fleet captain for help in becoming a Brancaster Cockler. We are particularly proud to feature on the front cover of the 2025 BSSC handbook.
