Sunday, November 21, 2010 at 9:02PM One notable highlight of this summer was a 'new' RTI record (for monohulls) set by Paddy Spink and John Ellison in their RS 400 with a time of 57.02 seconds.
The previous record has stood for 28 years and was set by Mike Swallow and Mervyn Nudds in a time of 53.07 in their 505. Mike will be the first to admit that the island was a little shorter back then, but nevertheless certainly a time that he thinks can still be beaten. With a combination of the right tide and wind conditions today's boats are certainly capable of setting a new record. We have one foiling moth sailor in the club, but will she bring it back from Singapore?!

I believe that Chris Moore and Sheila Spink hold the all time record in a Dart 18, in 1988 rather than 1989 as Chris recalls below.
"Funnily enough I can remember that Island race quite well, probably because the conditions were almost perfect. I think it was summer 1989 - Sheila will probably remember the year. It was blowing a steady 4 from the south which meant a flat sea outside and a 90 degree beam reach both ways. I can only remember a few occasions at Brancaster when the wind is from this direction at high tide! We ran out of the harbour past the wreck and arrived at Overy in 12 - 15 mins, put in 3 tacks and headed back towards the nod. I recall skimming over the grass for much of the time with the rudders up at about 14 kts ! Time at the finish was 42 minutes. There was some discussion afterwards about "the record" and someone (I think Jim Crossman) said that the quickest previous rounding was a 505 (Mike Swallow ?). Hope this helps and that you are able to trace some independent scrutiny to verify the facts - its rather a long time ago now !"
Can anyone do better!!!
